Since 1915, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has advanced academic freedom and shared governance, and continues to define professional values and standards, promote the economic security of those who teach and research in higher education, organize to make these goals a reality, and ensure higher education’s contribution to the common good.
The AAUP’s policy platform includes:
Labor Reform: Ending the reliance on low-wage contingent labor and securing collective bargaining rights for all faculty and staff at public institutions.
Restored Funding: A sustained reinvestment in public higher education to ensure college degrees are accessible and debt-free.
Freedom to Learn: New safeguards for academic freedom, shielding researchers and faculty from political interference and ideological thought policing.
Shared Governance: Ensuring faculty and staff—not corporate administrators—make final decisions on curriculum, research priorities, and institutional priorities.
The IU Indianapolis chapter pursues this mission at Indiana University and advocates for ALL faculty colleagues and graduate students who believe that their academic freedom has been violated.
